Love Should Lift You Up to Olympic Levels

Valentine’s Day has a certain energy. ��

It’s part romance, part expectation, part “why is everything pink and shaped like a heart, including things that absolutely should not be heart-shaped?” And somehow, right around the same time, the Olympics roll in and remind us that women are capable of things that make gravity look negotiable. ��

So here we are.
Surrounded by love stories and gold-medal moments… while many of us are trying to do a workout in a sports bra that’s holding on by thoughts, prayers, and an elastic band from 2014. ��

And that’s when it hits me every year: love and sport actually have one big thing in common.

The right support changes everything.

Not the cute kind of support where someone says “You’ve got this!” and then disappears the moment you need them to carry a couch. I mean real support. The kind that holds you steady when you move, breathe, sweat, jump, laugh, run, or simply walk down the stairs without your chest doing a dramatic slow-motion scene. ��

The January Blues Checklist: Symptoms Include Saying “Ugh” as a Full Sentence ❄️

January in Canada can feel long, dark, and emotionally exhausting, especially when the winter blues hit hard. If you’ve found yourself saying “ugh” as a full sentence lately, this January Blues Checklist is for you. A totally real, extremely scientific diagnostic guide from the Booby Gazette Medical Board (me, in a hoodie).

Depending on when you’re reading this, you’ve either almost made it through January … or you are currently crawling across the finish line like a champion with dry skin and a questionable attitude.

Either way: you’re close. And I’m proud of your socks for staying on.

If you’ve been feeling… off, flat, foggy, or “why am I cranky while holding a warm coffee?” you may be experiencing a common seasonal condition known as:

The January Blues

Also referred to as:

“Is it bedtime?”
“Why does everything feel like paperwork?”
“I need a nap and a snack and a new personality.”

Let’s diagnose you properly.

✅ January Blues Checklist

Tick all that apply.

Symptom #1: Saying “Ugh” as a complete sentence

Examples:

Friend: “How are you?”
You: “Ugh.”

Prescription:

Hot shower therapy (10 minutes minimum, 2 emotional breakthroughs optional)
Bonus: fresh pajamas after. It’s not laziness. It’s recovery.

Symptom #2: Your winter coat feels like a hostile coworker

You put it on and instantly forget who you were before the oppression.

Prescription:

Layer smarter, not angrier.
Softer base layers. Less scratchy nonsense. More peace.

Symptom #3: “It’s dark” has become your main hobby

You wake up: dark.
You blink: dark.
You look away: still dark.

Prescription:

Daylight lamp (tiny indoor sun, no tan lines, no drama)
Or stand by a window like a Victorian woman waiting for letters that will never come.

Symptom #4: Everything feels harder than it should

Opening jars. Answering texts. Choosing a movie. Finding the other mitten.

Prescription:

One “tiny win” daily
A 7-minute walk. A load of laundry. Returning one email.
These are victories. Put them on your résumé.

Symptom #5: Sudden cravings for beige foods

Toast. Pasta. Potatoes. Anything that looks like it could double as insulation.

Prescription:

Add one colour to your day
A clementine. A red pepper. A salad you complain about while eating.
Still counts.

Symptom #6: You are emotionally attached to your couch

The couch gets you. The couch doesn’t ask questions. The couch supports you in ways some people never will.

Prescription:

Couch, but with a plan
10 minutes outside (even if you stomp like an angry penguin).
Then return to couch with moral superiority.

Symptom #7: You’re wearing the same bra on repeat

Not because it’s your favourite. Because January has removed your ability to make decisions.

Prescription:

The “Cozy Bra” Rule
January is not the month for itchy, pokey, weird-fitting nonsense.
Wear the bra that makes you feel:
✔ supported
✔ comfy
✔ less likely to commit a crime in traffic

And listen… if your current bra is giving you “ugh” energy, you’re not being dramatic. You’re being properly diagnosed .

Symptom #8: Your internal monologue is aggressively unkind

You’re fine, but your brain is auditioning for a roast battle.

Prescription:
Talk to yourself like you would a friend:
Friend: “I’m behind this month.”
You: “It’s January. Everyone’s behind. Even the sun.”

Symptom #9: You keep checking the weather like it owes you money

And every day it’s like: “Minus 27. With feelings.”

Prescription:
Plan one small thing to look forward to.
Coffee date. Movie night. Bath. New book. New bra.
A treat that says: “I’m still here and I deserve joy.”

Symptom #10: Random tears… or random rage

You see a dog in a scarf and suddenly you’re emotional.
Or someone chews loudly and you consider moving provinces.

Prescription:

Movement + warmth combo
Short walk, warm drink, warm socks.
Basically: reset your nervous system, not your whole life.

If you can do 10 minutes of anything that feels like a soft reboot, you’re winning January.

Final Diagnosis ��

If you checked 3 or more , congratulations: you have The January Blues .
But here’s the hope potion: we’re at the very end of January. Whether you’re reading this on the 30th or the 31st, you’re basically in the victory lap.

Treatment Plan (simple + realistic)

Light (lamp or window)
Warmth (shower, tea, cozy socks)
Movement (tiny walk counts)
Support (from friends AND from bras)

And if you’re not thriving right now? That’s okay.
January is a month you survive, not a month you perfect. ��❄️

The Great Christmas Tree Debate: When Is the Right Time to Put It Up?

Every year, like clockwork, Canadians divide into two passionate camps:

Camp WAIT UNTIL DECEMBER, YOU MONSTER
and
Camp LIGHT IT UP, BABY, IT’S NOVEMBER 3RD.

And then… there’s me.
I put mine up the first week of November!
Yes, seven days before many believe “the season has officially begun,” and I regret absolutely nothing.

Because honestly?
The moment the tree lit up, my whole living room felt warmer, happier, and more peaceful — kind of like slipping into a perfectly supportive bra after wearing the wrong one for years. Because as soon as the girls stop bouncing, you power up like the NYC tree on lighting day — boom, instant confidence, and ready to sprint through Times Square like a woman on a mission!

�� So… When Should You Put Up Your Tree?

Let’s look at the “official” timelines people love to argue about:

⭐ 1. After Remembrance Day

This group is traditional, respectful, and patient.
Women with the kind of discipline who don’t have a junk drawer.

Goodbye summer of 2025—you were short, sweet, and just supportive enough to lift us higher than we thought possible.

Goodbye summer of 2025—you were short, sweet, and just supportive enough to lift Canada higher than we thought possible.

This was the summer Canadians collectively took a hard pass on visiting our crazy cousins to the south. Instead of braving airports, security lines, and exchange rates that make our wallets cry, we leaned into homegrown adventures. According to Airbnb, travel trends shifted in a big way: more of us chose “off the beaten path” getaways—small towns, cozy cabins, lakeside hideaways, and coastal gems. Who knew the real push-up we needed was right here in our own backyard?

It was also the summer I reconnected with my roots—Canadian to the core. From the French heartbeat of Montreal, where I was born and spent a very warm week enjoying delicious food, to my Alberta home, where warm lake evenings, BBQs, and sunsets with friends made me proud of this wild and beautiful prairie life, I was reminded of how deeply I love this country. ��Canada is stitched into me—from cheese curds and maple syrup to prairie skies and cowboy boots. Honestly, I’m as Canadian as Canadian gets.

It was also the summer I fell in love… with pickleball. �� After four knee surgeries and a messy breakup with tennis, pickleball swooped in like a younger, hotter fling who’s easier on the joints. Playful, addictive, and sweaty enough to remind me why a good sports bra is as important as a paddle, it became my summer romance. And I wasn’t alone—pickleball courts are popping up everywhere across Canada like mushrooms after a prairie rainstorm. If summer were a bra, pickleball was the underwire that gave me all a fresh new lift.

Now that the leaves are blazing with colour and the morning air has that familiar crisp bite, we know flip-flop season is on its way out (cue the collective Canadian sniffle). Still, fall has its own cozy magic. Sweaters return, pots of soup bubble gently on the stove, and there’s that delicious little thrill of rocking your brightest sports bra under layers of knits—your secret confidence boost. Back-to-School, Back-to-Boobs 🎒👙

Fall has always been a shifting season for me—kind of like my bra drawer, constantly evolving, never quite the same from one decade to the next.

In my 20s and 30s , fall was about freedom. I played hockey and would get excited for the season to start, and it was also travelling time. I’d take trips and soak up the beautiful fall season across ��Canada—crisp mornings, crunchy leaves, and that glorious smell of woodsmoke in the air. ��✈️ And of course, I still tried to convince myself that a $10 beer at the Saddledome was “an investment in memories.” ��

Then came the kids . Suddenly, fall wasn’t about hockey and fun—it was about back-to-school chaos . Lunches to pack, school supplies to buy (why do they always need ten glue sticks?), and shopping trips that turned into Olympic-level endurance events. Honestly, I deserved a medal just for surviving Staples in September. ��✏️

Fast-forward to post-divorce life , with one child half-time. Now I’m staring at September like, “Well… do I just sit here and sip pumpkin spice until she comes back?” ��☕ Do I reinvent fall as pickleball season? Dating season? Or simply the season where I finally get to pee without someone yelling MOM!! from the other room?

Seasons change, ladies. Our lives keep flipping chapters, and so do our boobs. Yep—I said it. �� Could Sports Be the Holy Grail of Youth?

(Or Just the Best Excuse to Wear a Bra That Could Double as Body Armor?)

Let’s talk about aging.
Not the “wine gets better” kind — the “why did I just pull a muscle putting on socks” kind.

When I turned 60 this year, I had a moment. Not a crisis — more like a WTF whisper from the universe:

“Hey, remember when you used to be competitive, athletic, fierce?”

Yeah. I remembered. Vividly.

I was an athlete.
Hockey, tennis, soccer, fastball — I didn’t just play sports in my 20s, 30s, and early 40s. I competed. I trained. I had calves that could crack walnuts and a confidence that could crack glass ceilings.

Then came:
�� Marriage
�� Kids
�� A pandemic
�� A divorce
(Yes, I collected the full set of adulting milestones.)

And somewhere in the shuffle…
I stopped playing.

�� But Then… Pickleball.

Yes, pickleball.
The name is ridiculous.
The game is revolutionary.

It’s like tennis and ping pong had a baby — and that baby saved my life.

I started playing.
Then I started loving it.

Pickleball reignited something in me.
It got me moving, sweating, laughing, trash-talking, and yes — feeling young again.
Not “I’m 25 and invincible” young, but “I’ve survived some serious sh*t and still look good in a skort” young.

Recently, I played with a mother-daughter duo — the mom was 89 years old and absolutely crushing it on the court. She had style, sass, and a killer forehand. And I thought: If this is what aging can look like... SIGN. ME. UP.

�� The Secret Sauce?

Movement. Competition. Community.

There’s something about sports — real, playful, joy-filled movement — that taps into our younger selves.

It’s not about winning medals (although let’s be honest, I still want one).
It’s about energy. Vitality. Endorphins. That fire in your belly that says:

“I’m still here, dammit — and I’ve got game.”

From tiny towns to big cities, I’ve seen what Canadian women are made of… and let me tell you — we are SO much stronger, softer, grittier, and more powerful than we even realize.

Ever gone on a trip and realized you packed the wrong bras for that horseback riding adventure or pickleball match? Painful mistake!!!

A friend of mine (we’ll call her Sarah to protect the unsupported) came back from a romantic getaway to Mexico with her boyfriend and immediately called me. Not to gush about the sunsets, the margaritas, or the dreamy beach walks—but to confess her massive packing mistake.

Sarah had packed push-up bras for “nice vacation vibes” and ONE comfy pullover sports bra for lounging. She figured she was set. She figured wrong.

Push-Up Perils & Pullover Problems

The first disaster? Pickleball.

Sarah and her boyfriend had a fun little couples competition planned at the resort courts, but what she didn’t plan for was her push-up bra trying to escape the match.

New Year, New Booby-titude Let Them Be Boobs...

As Mel Robbins teaches us in her brilliant Let Them book, the key to peace and happiness is learning to let people be who they are. And you know what? The same can be said about our bras. Yep, you heard me. Life lessons from your lingerie drawer are very real.

Think about it: every bra in your wardrobe has a personality. Some are loud, flashy, and full of sparkle—great for a night out but not exactly what you need when it’s time for serious support. Others are reliable, comfortable, and there for you every day, like that friend who always shows up when you need a good vent session.

But here’s the thing: not every bra (or person) is meant to do it all. That lacy little number? It’s not here to support your high-impact gym class. And your sports bra? It doesn’t want to spend its life under cocktail dresses. The trick is to let them be who they are and stop expecting them to be something they’re not.

It’s the same with people. We’ve all had that “party friend” we love to hit the dance floor with but wouldn’t call for deep emotional talks. On November 11th, as we pause to remember those who sacrificed so much for our freedom, it’s also worth reflecting on the surprising ways that world wars changed everyday life—yes, even things like bras, corsets, and sliced bread. During World War I, every ounce of metal counted, and corsets, which required steel stays, were still popular. In 1917, the U.S. War Industries Board urged women to give up their corsets to save steel for the war effort. Women answered the call, freeing up about 28,000 tons of metal, enough to build two battleships! With corsets on their way out, bras stepped in as a modern, lightweight alternative that offered support without restrictive metal stays. Suddenly, women could move and breathe freely, an essential change as many began working in factories and offices.

In Canada, this shift also affected the courageous "Bluebirds," military nurses who served on the front lines in blue uniforms, caring for wounded soldiers in extreme conditions. The new bra, far more practical than the corset, gave these women the freedom and comfort they needed to carry out demanding, often dangerous roles. The Bluebirds and other wartime women became symbols of a new era, proving that women were not only capable but ready to embrace responsibility and resilience.

Meanwhile, the years following World War I saw another convenience come to the forefront: pre-sliced bread. By the late 1920s, this kitchen marvel saved time for busy women everywhere, promising simplicity and ease in the kitchen. But in 1943, during World War II, the U.S. government temporarily banned pre-sliced bread to conserve resources like wax paper and steel. The backlash was swift—once people had experienced the ease of sliced bread, they couldn’t go back to hacking at a loaf! Much like the bra, which had become an essential after replacing the corset, once women had a taste of support and convenience, there was no going back.

Both world wars forever changed women’s lives. Bras replaced the restrictive corset, supporting women as they took on essential new roles in the workforce. Sliced bread brought ease to their routines, freeing up time for them to tackle fresh challenges. These small changes marked an era of new freedoms and independence, showing that even the smallest shifts in our daily lives can have a lasting impact.

This Remembrance Day, as we wear our poppies and observe a moment of silence, let’s honor those sacrifices that allowed us to stand tall, speak up, and embrace these freedoms—even in the smallest comforts we now take for granted. ��️

Alright, confession time: the thought of going braless? �� Downright spooky for us well-endowed ladies. It’s like one of those classic Halloween fears – spiders ��️, haunted houses, or running out of chocolate. But, turns out, there’s a little magic in ditching the bra for a night – and some unexpected treats �� to go along with the trick.

Going braless may sound like a breeze for some, but if you’re packing a little extra up top, it can feel like you’re unleashing two wild ghosts �� under that sweater. And while I'm not here to claim it's a fear-free experience (especially when stairs get involved ��), I recently came across a book called Dressed to Kill �� that had me rethinking the entire support system, so to speak. In this book, authors Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer reveal some eerie facts ��: wearing bras too often could affect our breast health due to restricted lymphatic drainage. COURAGE: The Real Gold in Sports

GO CANADA GO!

I'm sure just like me you are cheering for all of our Olympians and wishing them great success. Partnering with Olympian Danielle Goyette when I started this company gave me a deep admiration for the dedication it takes to be an Olympian. Trust me, it's no easy feat—I'm exhausted just thinking about it!

Did you know that sport participation rates for Canadian girls decline steadily from childhood to adolescence? By their teenage years, as many as 62% of girls are no longer participating in sports. That's a bummer.

I was the exception to the rule because I started playing sports in my late teens. I played competitive hockey and tennis for years. I learned a lot about leadership, teamwork, confidence, and how to cope with losing, which has been crucial in my business and personal life.

The most invaluable lesson I learned from playing sports was COURAGE.

The courage to put myself out there for my team and for myself, knowing I could lose, but doing it anyway.

And lose, I did.

And I cried.

AND I REBOUNDED!

I learned that it's always more about the journey than the medals.

So to all the women Olympians out there, go hard and then go home and be proud because we are supporting you and are already all proud of you no matter what.

And to all of you Canadian Women, I want to be part of YOUR support team. Whether you're a 32A or a 44H, whether you walk, skate, or bounce a ball, I'm here to help you reach your goals with the best support possible. Because let's face it, all women need a little lift sometimes!

Oh my gosh Valued Customer , what a journey it's been! From the icy rinks to the bustling internet superhighway, I've had the immense pleasure of supporting you, the incredible women of Canada, like a trusty sports bra since 1999. This July, we're not just marking a quarter-century of business; we're celebrating a legacy of innovation, empowerment, and yes, even a few humorous mishaps along the way (who could forget the 'Boob Mobile'?).

Twenty-five years ago, Danielle Goyette, Kim Rowat, and I opened DANBRIKIE SPORTS out of a vibrant, bright yellow store in Calgary. The name, a quirky blend of our first names, was a lesson in branding all on its own. It taught me the power of simplicity, leading to my direct and clear SPORTSBRAS.CA. Now, there's no confusion about where to find the best sports bras online!

Remember that wild morning in 2001 when a truck crashed into our store for a "smash and grab"? Or when we transitioned from a physical shop to dominate the online world, making it super easy for you to shop for sports bras with just a click? We’ve always been about breaking barriers to bring you the best.

Our adventure also included launching the "Boob Mobile," creating the e-fitting quiz to ensure you find the perfect fit from home, and sharing countless tales of entrepreneurship—sprinkled with laughs from my stand-up comedy gigs!

As we celebrate 25 fabulous years this month, we are taking this opportunity to reflect on all the milestones and the wonderful support we've received from you all. As the proud owner of SportsBras.ca and Women Talk , I've always believed in the power of intention and action. Today, I want to share a story that embodies this belief—a story that unfolded just last week in the enchanting land of Mexico.

Little did I know, this decision would lead me to a serendipitous encounter with someone extraordinary—Alejandra, a psychologist and my salesperson at the resort.

From the moment we met, there was an undeniable connection between us. I could sense that she was destined to play a significant role in my life, and she felt the same about me. With unwavering belief in the manifestation process, I shared my aspirations with her—my identity, my endeavors, and my plans for the retreats. Finding the perfect bra is no one-time task; it’s a responsibility you’ll need to revisit as you grow in age and stage, from adolescence, to adulthood, maternity, through sickness, and for health. No matter the stage, bras are necessary to support, shape, and flatter the female body throughout their daily lives.

But how do you determine whether you’re wearing a proper fitting bra? Read to learn everything you need to know about the bra fitting process.

How to Understand Bra Sizing: The Basics

There are two important factors that will determine the right bra size: your band size and your cup size —also known as the numbers and letters labelling all of the undergarments in your local bra boutique.

To get started, measure your band size. Lightly trace a tape measure around your body. Measure from two to three inches above your bust around to the middle of your back and record the inches. If you are in between sizes it is best to round down, as bra straps stretch significantly over time. From the first sports bra, patented in 1977, two jockstraps sewed together (yeap no kidding!) to today's hybrid sports bras, sports bras have come a long way. Not only on how they are made but also how we buy them.

In 1999 I realize how difficult it was for women to find proper fitting sports equipment. As a hockey player, I wasn't able to purchase women's hockey equipment in my city. Wanting to help my friend Olympic Gold Medalist Danielle Goyette, I created the first-ever women's sports store. After a few years, I decided to streamline the store to sell only sports bras. It was evident to me that Canadian women had a hard time finding proper fitting, supportive sports bras—especially those with larger cup sizes.

We've changed how we deliver our services through the years, from a retail store to a boutique by appointment only to our BOOB MOBILE mobile store. But it became clear to me that online shopping was the way of the future. In 2005, I created www.sportsbras.ca. At that time, selling sports bras online seemed like a crazy idea out of Startrek! The belief was that women would never be comfortable buying bras online! But we stayed the course and kept building our website and developing ways to deliver better services online.

In an era where online shopping is now becoming the preferred way to shop for many people, ww.sportsbras.ca is ready and able to support women online! When COVID19 hit in March 2020, we saw our sales go up 400%. With our e-fitting quiz , excellent customer service and flat shipping fees , we continue to support women right across Canada. How long should my sports bra last?

I get asked all the time: “how long should my sports bra last?” Difficult question to answer – there are so many factors involved! But typically my answer is: YOUR BRA SHOULD NOT HAVE A BIRTHDAY!

Like your best friend, many factors will affect the life of your bra. Here are a few:

How do you wash your bra?
If you hand wash your sports bra, it will last a lot longer – but who has time for that! A customer came up with a great solution; wear your sport bra in the shower; voila 2 birds with one stone! And how often do you wash it? I confess…since I workout in my basement, BY MYSELF, I keep wearing mine until IT SMELLS! I just hang it to dry after every workout! One of my ENELL’s is 10 years old… I do own MANY sports bras and I own a front load washer! (…I am considering the shower thing!)
How many bras do you own?
Some of my customers own ONE. That’s it; ONE sports bra! Who can live with only ONE??!! If you can rotate your bras and give ‘her’ time to recuperate from ‘her’ work out, ‘she’ will definitely live a longer life!
Are you a twirler?
What’s a twirler you ask??? You know, those of you that haven’t practice yoga and can’t do up you bra at the back…you have to hook it up at the front and TWIRL it around pulling and stretching everything on the bra. YOUR bra will die of abuse much sooner!
Is it cheap?
Did you buy a $20 sports bra? Then you deserve a premature bra death! You get what you pay for! And if you are larger than a B cup and bought a cheap bra, you need therapy!
Your cup size
Sorry ladies, but if your “girls” are heavier, they will make your sports bras work harder! The heavier the ‘load’, the shorter the life! So make sure you get a good quality sports bra! She will give you better support and will have a much longer life span.

When is it time for a sports bra FUNERAL?

Do you have safety pins keeping it together? Don’t laugh I’ve seen it more than once!
Does it have holes or rips? Maybe OK if you’re into S&M?
Is it discoloured? Remember mom’s advice about clean underwear?
Does it cause chafing? If your bra used to be comfy, but now makes you look like you have a flesh-eating disease after a run…
Are you bouncing more?
Is it riding up?
Is the elastic not stretchy anymore?
Are you on the tightest hook and it still feels loose?
Has your weight changed? Sure it’s just temporary, but if the bra is hanging on you or you have one (or two) muffin tops…

As a young girl, I loved to run. I would don my Adidas track suit and Puma runners and head for paths unknown. It was freedom, it was exhilarating. It was effortless. As I got older, I still ran, but less often, but that was okay, I was in my twenties, I could always run when I wanted. It didn’t matter that I smoked, ate poorly, kept long hours, the ability to run could be called up at any time. It was effortless. That is, until, one day, when it wasn’t. One day, I went for a run, expecting the same feeling of freedom, only to find myself clutching a light pole a block from my house, coughing up a lung and wondering when my rear end had slid down to my knees. A day of reckoning, and the day that I started running again for real. So, how do you start running? Left, right, left, right, repeat.

I am a big busted woman, and quite frankly, I already had my butt dragging behind me, I didn’t want to be tripping on my chest in front of me. So, I bought a sports bra. At a running store. A good one. Ok. I tried wearing one. I bounced. Two. Bounce. Three. Bounce. Four. Yup, Four. And I ran, still bounced, but I couldn’t fit five. As I ran, I renewed my love for the activity. I ran longer, felt better, wanted to run more. I rediscovered my stamina, endurance, the joy in running, I discovered breathing. I also discovered chafing. Runners are an odd bunch. Especially those of us who were not exactly born to run, but love it, and are determined to run further, stronger, faster, even though we are bleeding, blistering, chafing. When you run longer distances, you will find that most of your body is either strapped down, or it’s covered in Vaseline. Truly, a glamorous sport.

When you are wearing 4 sports bras at a time, you will chafe, oh, will you chafe. You will chafe under your arms where the seams rub you raw, you will develop a gorilla like arm stance as you run, because you will not stop , but you can’t put your arms down either – too painful. By this point, my sister was also part of my running world, and together, we discovered all sorts of weird places that can hurt as a result of ill fitting adventurous running clothes. When you are silly enough to wear the wrong equipment, your body will tell you in bold print, all caps, no doubt about it. I have peeled off my four running bras to discover bleeding raw skin across my ribs from the friction, nipples that bleed and are so painful (Vaseline is your friend) not to mention, so very ugly. Oh, and then, you will find yourself comparing wounds with other runners. Really! I once developed a blister on my belly, the cause was the clasp of a fanny pack on exposed skin. I knew a woman who had big red welts on her ankles from the plastic covering on her shoe laces. They were too long, and each time she stepped, the plastic slapped her ankles. Over a couple of hours, very painful welts. Sooo sexy. So, you can picture the sight of me running, arms in gorilla position, bleeding from the chest, which is not only bleeding, and blistered, but still bouncing in spite of the four bras I am wearing, covered in Vaseline, not to mention the natural “glow” that comes from exertion. Is it any wonder that we did not buy the finish line photos?

But, we were running, and bouncing. And then, a miracle. The ENELL SPORT bra.

My sister saw the ENELL on TV, and there was only one place in town to get it. So off we went to Sportsbras.ca to see Brigitte, and that was it. We were fitted, I remember I was a size one at the time. Brigitte got us fitted and kitted out. We stood there, a little nervous, wearing only one bra. Could it be true? We jumped. My chest didn’t. Jump, jump, jump. Nothing. No bounce. Hallelujah.

That was about ten years ago. We only run in the ENELL, which is a size 0 for me now. To be clear, ONE ENELL. One. Six marathons later, countless training runs and still sitting up where they should be. I am about to start training for a 50k race in May. The ENELL is a very important piece of my training equipment. As important as my shoes. I don’t have the war wounds to lend to the conversation anymore, but when I spot a woman bouncing, bleeding down the path, arms out at her sides, I have been known to chase her down and flash my ENELL and offer Vaseline. It’s the least I can do.

Hey, you wouldn’t run in high heels, why would you run in lingerie? Right. So now, 14 years after clutching that pole, I can honestly say, that running is once again; freedom, exhilarating, and yup, effortless.

Left, right, left, right, repeat.

THE FIRST SPORTS BRA WAS A JOCKSTRAP!

That's right ladies the first sports bra was invented in 1977 by Lisa Lindahl and Polly Smith and it was two jockstraps sewed together!

Lisa had tried jogging in her regular bra and found it too “bouncy”. After speaking with her sister (another jogger) Victoria Woodrow, who was complaining about her bad experience exercising in an ordinary bra; runaway straps, chafing and sore breasts, Lisa came up with the requirements for what she and her sister jokingly called a “jockstrap for women”:

• The straps shouldn’t fall down

• There should be no pokey hardware

• It should eliminate breast bounce

Lindahl enlisted the help of costume designer Polly Smith, and together they tried out a few prototypes. But it wasn’t until Lisa’s husband paraded around wearing a jockstrap on his chest that the pair saw their solution. “Here’s your jockbra, ladies,” he clowned; and for a while the name stuck, especially after Polly stitched two male supporters together and found that a jockstrap for women was the way to go!

Yes that’s right, it all started with a…. JOCKSTRAP! We’ve come a long way!! !!

Would you consider running in your stilettos? Then why are women running in everyday wear bras?

Sports bras are not clothing, they are a piece of equipment – just like your running shoes! And just like your running shoes, a lot of money and time has gone into designing and building your sports bras.

Sports bras are actually the the most difficult and technical piece of clothing to make and design! A good sports bra also uses expensive highly technical fabric that will keep you dry, bounceless and even bacteria free. They are about support, comfort and wicking. They also keep the girls in place, and will prevent injuries to yourself (and others!) Your everyday wear bras are all about looks and (sometimes) comfort!

If you fail to wear a supportive and properly fitting sports bra during exercise it can lead to permanent breast damage whether you're experiencing pain or not, and even if your breasts are very small. Unlike other part of your body, the only thing that keeps your breasts in place are very small ligaments ( Cooper's ligaments ), fatty tissue and mammary glands. They simply need reinforcement when you exercise!

Once you have the perfect fitting sports bra you will be amazed how good it feels on! And you will be able to jump with joy…without hurting yourself! It will even make your work-out feel easier….THAT’S RIGHT, you will feel less tired if you keep the girls under control! When you put your ENELL SPORTS on, you will feel invincible and ready to go!

Your everyday wear bra (aka lingerie) may be built to make your “girls” look good, but doing jumping jacks in your push-up bra won't be comfortable nor pretty to watch!
